Hanksville Diversion

Schmidt Construction was the general contractor on this 9 million dollar NRCS project. Schmidt provided earthwork, concrete, piping, rip rap, and de-watering. Successfully completed this project on time and within budget overcoming many obstacles.

Schmidt Construction poured the abutments, set the bridge and installed irrigation piping.  Schmidt Construction is certified in HDPE pipe welding and installed over 9,000 ft. of 30” and 36” HDPE pipe. This pipe was to be used to supply water to all the farms in Hanksville, Utah. Conditions varied from wet to dry, and rocky to sandy ground depth varied from a 4’ to over 40’. The pipes ran through several BLM sensitive sites. Our relationship with the BLM proved to be very valuable enabling the project to run smoothly.

This project required 7 months of dewatering 24 hours a day. Schmidt Construction built the concrete drainage across the Freemont River also known as the “dirty devil”. This river can run 1 CFS up to over 10,000 CFS in roughly 2 hours. The diversion had a cut off wall 27’ below surface and the diversions foundation was built on the wall and over 200 gravel piers that were 50 plus ft. deep. It was a challenging job that stretched our ability but we were able to complete this project on time and within budget.
