Why Schmidt Construction

Schmidt Construction, Inc. was started by Phil and Jessica Schmidt in 1981 in Alaska.  Before starting their own business Phil worked as a Foreman for the Public Health Service installing water and sewer to native villages all over the Bush in Alaska.  This taught him the importance of being organized, and of studying your plans in great detail before the project started.  He worked in areas where everything (including your food) had to be barged or flown to the site.  The project could be held up for months if you forgot anything.  He learned a great deal about soils, as Alaska presents every condition; running sand, high water table, frost, rock, etc.  Jessica had enjoyed being the office manager for a large construction company in Anchorage.  They decided their skills and backgrounds would make a great team. They took all of their savings and started their own business.  In their 34 years of business, Schmidt Construction has completed projects in Alaska, Idaho, Washington and Utah becoming known in each location for their excellent work ethic, and punctuality.  As described by Kit Wareham, the City Engineer of Cedar City (where Schmidt Construction has been based since 1995) “Cedar City’s experience with Schmidt Construction has always been excellent. Schmidt Construction sets the standard in Cedar City for quality work that is performed in a timely and efficient manner.”

The type of work that Schmidt Construction does is varied, but our quality of work is consistent throughout. When the company was first started, they began with foundations and installing water and sewer services, as opportunities arose they went on to Earthwork, Structural Concrete, Infrastructure, Commercial and Residential buildings.  They also expanded by adding a Sand, Gravel and Topsoil operation in 2001, making products for concrete, asphalt, construction, landscaping and private use.

Schmidt Construction believes that in order to have a successful project, you have to have a qualified team. Schmidt Construction takes great pride in their excellent crew, and invests in their skills with additional safety and task training. Several members of the crew are first aid and CPR certified including all of the foremen. The crew is also OSHA and MSHA Trained, and Schmidt’s Gravel operation has been awarded several Certificates of Achievement in Safety from MSHA. The operators at Schmidt Construction are task trained for each machine. The crew also regularly attends advanced training in trade skills, in order to stay up to date in new practices and changing technology. Schmidt Construction understands the importance of staying current with construction practices and technology. Because of this, Schmidt Construction uses GPS Surveying equipment and machine controls on their dozers and blades.
